Lidia Ivanova: I believe in Mustafina like I believe in God

The two-time Olympic champion and gymnastics merited coach of the USSR and Russia, Lidia Ivanova explained in an exclusive interview for Sportbox.ru, after the Antwerp World Championship, the reasons of her confidence in a Russian success in the Netherlands.

“Before the start of the championship we were warned that we shouldn’t wait for hight expectations because of the injuries and sickness that surrounded the team. But I was sure that with Aliya Mustafina in Antwerp, we wouldn’t be left without a medal. I believe in this athlete, like I believe in God. She has all the qualities that are inherent in the present athletes: talent, perseverance, confidence and the ability to perform. And Alia did not disappoint. It was evident that she had some hard times on this competition. But she tried. In the All-Around Aliya was so confident of gaining a shell to the projectile that if she still had a couple of routines left, she would have caught up and overtaken the Americans. Aliya adequately presented the entire Russian gymnastics in this tournament.” said Ivanova
- How to evaluate the début of another Russian who competed in the All Around and balance beam finals, Anna Rodionova?
- Anya – well done. She gave her best on this competition establishing herself as a world-class athlete. Yes, on the beam final Rodionova finished on the 8th place, due  to the fall . But in Antwerp we also so much more experienced athletes falling on beam – such as Romanian gymnast Larisa Iordache. Anna has great prospects ahead of her if she will work harder.
